Edouard Vuillard’s lithograph, produced in the studio of the printer Auguste Clot, represents the dramatist Tristan Bernard (left) and an unidentified figure hunched over a checkerboard. The setting, a warm-toned interior decorated with floral wallpaper, is likely the apartment of Vuillard’s patron Thadée Natanson, on the rue Saint- Florentin in Paris. The scene is presided over by Misia, Natanson’s wife, a leading light of the French fin-de-siècle art world who was the object of Vuillard’s unrequited love. In a style characteristic of Vuillard, the interior scene is built up with layers of overlapping color, each printed from a separately inked stone.
