La femme aux figues (Woman with Figs), 1894, no. 5 of the album Germinal, 1899
1894
Not on view
Paul Gauguin's etching Woman with Figs dates from around 1894, but other than a few trial proofs it remained unpublished until the Germinal edition. It bears some evidence of the hand of his close colleague, Armand Seguin, who had far greater experience as an etcher and likely provided Gauguin with technical assistance. The barely legible inscription chez Séguin à St Julien ("at the home of Séguin at Saint-Julien") in the upper left corner implies that Séguin printed the trial proofs at his residence in Le Pouldu. Whatever its germination, Woman with Figs combines the distinctive calligraphy of Séguin's foliage with the figure style of Gauguin and may represent the product of a true collaboration.
