La coiffure (Woman Dressing)
ca. 1885
Not on view
Degas was inspired by Japanese prints to depict subjects of women bathing, dressing, or preparing their toilettes. (He notably displayed Kiyonaga's diptych Interior of a Bathhouse, featuring only female figures, in his bedroom.) Transplanted to modern-day Paris, the bathers became part of his repertoire - painted, drawn, and printed- that already included ballerinas, laundresses, and sex workers. (from K. Breuer, Japanesque)
