Korikaariye (Harp)
early 20th century
Not on view
The Senufo culture are known for their rich cultural traditions, including music, dance, and art. Music plays a significant role in their ceremonial and secular performances. Instruments like this korikaariye, a harp-lute, are often used in funeral and divination practices. The sounding chamber is made from a hollowed-out gourd covered with tanned cowhide and decorated with intricate designs. A carved female figurine sits atop the gourd base, originally serving as the bridge connecting the four hide strings to the instrument's neck. The korikaariye would be played to invite the presence of spirits and is an important part of Senufo cultural and spiritual traditions.
