Jacob Koopee Jr. was the great-great grandson of famed potter Nampeyo (Tewa-Hopi ca. 1860-1942). He was taught and greatly influenced by his aunt, Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo (American, Tewa-Hopi, ca. 1928-1992), another renowned and skilled potter. Koopee carried on the family tradition of adapting and combining older pottery motifs to create innovative designs. In this pot, Koopee references the low, wide seed jars from the ancestral Hopi village of Sikyatki and updates the classic bulbous form. Koopee's pot sits on a slender and delicate base, flares out to a sharp, wide shoulder, then abruptly narrows to create a nearly flat top. Like Sikyatki style pots, the top is painted with a polychrome geometric design that references pottery shards, like those found near the ancestral villages, and elements from kiva murals.
