Quietly expressing a reverence for the world around him, Giorgio Morandi depicted in his still-lifes objects of daily existence and the topography of his beloved Bologna. The artist did not depict places or things in detail but rather captured the aura and essence of his subjects through simplification and selective omission. This 1930 etching is one of the largest and most ambitious of his graphic works. It was purchased through an acquisition fund set up by Manug Terzian, a San Francisco schoolteacher, for the acquisition of works on paper by Morandi.
