1565-1575
Artwork Viewer
This precious silver frame was made in the wealthy port city of Genoa by the Flemish goldsmith Balthasar Martines. It depicts the Five Senses in the guise of female figures set against ornate scrolling strapwork, surmounted by Sight holding a mirror. To the left, Touch is pecked by a bird, and to the right, Hearing holds musical instruments. The standing figures Smell and Taste hold flowers and fruit, respectively. Luxury objects like this were often given to women upon marriage, and indeed, the small enameled cartouche at the bottom displays the coat of arms and emblem of two powerful Genoese families, the Doria and Lomellini.
