Fragment of The Virgin and the Spanish Saints
ca. 1440–1468
Not on view
The nine churchmen in full ecclesiastical regalia are saints and martyrs who were born in Spain, as is inscribed at the base of the panel: “QUI IN HISPANIA NATI SUNT”. Ranged in three tiers, all have ornamented haloes and wear copes. The three archbishops carry crosiers; the six bishops and abbots hold pastoral staffs. Scrolls identify each saint by name. From Anna Gray Bennett, "Five Centuries of Tapestry: The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco" (San Francisco: Chronicle Books; The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, 1976; repr. 1992): pp. 26 - 28.
