Fragment
late 15th–early 16th century
Not on view
This textile is in the style of Italian ferronnerie velvet, named for the ironwork that the designs' delicate outlines resemble. Although it appears typically Italian, its weave structure suggests that it was made at a workshop in Istanbul or Bursa. By the late fifteenth century, Italian silks typically had S-twisted main warp threads; this textile's main warp threads are Z-twisted, indicating an Ottoman origin. From the late 15th century into the 16th century, luxury textiles were frequently given as diplomatic gifts between the Ottoman and Venetian courts, resulting in shared artistic styles and motifs.Â
