Exposition de la Gravure Japonaise (Exhibition of Japanese Prints)
1890

Jules Chéret created this advertisement for Siegfried Bing's important exhibition of Japanese prints in 1890. Bing contributed most of the prints, although he also borrowed from the foremost japonistes whose names are prominently listed in Chéret's type-heavy design. The exhibition, grand by even today's standards, surveyed the tradition with a display of 725 woodcuts and 421 illustrated books. Chéret's depiction of a kimono-clad woman probably derives from his observations of female types in the art of Utamaro; the decorative borders along the poster edges allude to the silk brocade mounts of kakemono-e (hanging picture scrolls).
