Ecce Homo
ca. 1630
Not on view
Peter Paul Rubens's painting of the same name from ca. 1610-1612, now in the Hermitage Museum, Saint Peterburg, was the source for this engraving of the Ecce Homo, the moment when Pontius Pilate presents the scarred Christ wearing his crown of thorns to the people and says "Behold the Man" ("Ecce Homo" in Latin). Rubens's fair-haired Christ is classical in conception, based on a drawing of a centaur that he made in Rome.
