Dreaming by the Fireside
1899
Artwork Viewer
By the mid-1890s, Camille Claudel, onetime studio assistant and
romantic partner, had ended her personal and professional relationship with Rodin. She produced this intimate marble during
a productive period of independence; it belongs to a group of
sensitively observed scenes from life known as “sketches after
nature.” Showing a woman slumped forward in contemplation, the
composition became one of Claudel’s few commercially successful
works, editioned in sixty-five versions in diverse materials. Delicate
carving conjures flames in the hearth; other versions were electrified,
almost like night-lights. One of two marble originals, this sculpture
was commissioned by an important patron, the Countess de Maigret.
