Di degno Cavalier tenera Moglie ... (The Masked Ball)
after 1746
Not on view
This engraving of a painting of 1746 by Pietro Longhi titled "The Meeting" (Metropolitan Museum of Art, Samuel Kress Collection, 36.16) reveals fascinating aspects concerning the masked society that Venice had become in the eighteenth century. Maskers and their sometimes illicit behaviors became a subject of great interest for Longhi who, by midcentury, began reprising Venetians and their social life. Filpart's engraving is one of a series of versions dealing with titillating interactions between couples.Â
