Costume design for Mademoiselle Baletta in Le coeur de la marquise (Hermitage Theater, St. Petersburg, 1902)
Not on view
Léon Bakst was one of the most celebrated theater designers of the twentieth century. Early in his career, Bakst designed this costume for a production of a French pantomime ballet performed at the Hermitage Theater for the Russian tzar’s family and court members. The neoclassical theme of the set and costumes is evident here in the dress’s high waist and long, simple skirt, inspired by Greco-Roman tunics.
