Container
In the highlands of northern Sumatra a special class of cultured priest (datu) existed among the Batak people who were the diviners and interpreters of the spiritual realm. Mediating and exerting influence between man, nature, and the supernatural, datu were men who possessed immense knowledge. Literate, and conversant with ancient Batak texts, they were also proficient in medicinal lore and in the harnessing and utilization of white and black magic.
Datu owned materials that were emblematic and essential to their craft, including magic staffs, priestly books, inscribed charms, and a variety of containers that were used for storing medicines and magical ointments.
The datu who created this masterful container skillfully visualized its torso from a section of bamboo. The exaggerated head, stern visage of the face, and twisted body all warn against the opening or improper handling of this object.
