Concert champĂȘtre (Venetian Landscape)

Not on view
The Concert champĂȘtre is an excellent example of Watteau's pastoral renderings, which, like other drawings of this type by the artist, was either wholly or largely inspired by Venetian drawings and paintings. Just as Rubens and Rembrandt copied from admired masters as well as from nature, Watteau did not hesitate to draw from revered examples of the past, especially the works of Rubens and the Venetians. An engraving of 1517 by Giulio and Domenico Campagnola entitled Shepherds in a Landscape may be the main source for this drawing. Watteau would have also had access to French financier Pierre Crozat's vast holdings of artworks, which included multiple landscape drawings by the Campagnolas. Our Hilly landscape with woman and donkey (1984.2.39) is a fitting example of the type of drawing that would have interested Watteau.
