Child’s blanket
The blanket is small in size, indicating that it might have been woven for a young child to wear and to use as a blanket for warmth. The composition features an impressive commotion of patterns, colors, and shapes, illustrating all the characteristic design elements of a late classic-style serape. The design is an assortment of terraced motifs outlining the diamond shapes merging into the serrated, zigzag forms. The three horizontal layers of zigzag bands have some interesting features. The center panel of the zigzag configuration captures the eye as it floats in and out.I especially admire the varying scale of the zigzag construction. The weaver incorporated Saltillo-style vertical zigzags to enhance the common zigzag pattern. The weaver evidently liked weaving the pattern as she utilized every open space with zigzag arrays in various sizes and shapes. As a final touch, the weaver inserted a small number of green, flat serrated motifs to offset the busy red, blue, and off-white composition. As a weaver, I occasionally make a little statement by inserting a subtle symbol or alteration of expected color combinations. The weaver was both ambitious and uninhibited in achieving the outcome of this stimulating child’s blanket.
