Cherub
ca. 1740–1745
Not on view
As first noted by Paul Scolari (note in the Achenbach, 1989) this drawing is a detailed study for the putto that appears at left to the Virgin in The Transportation of the House of the Virgin from Nazareth to Loreto, painted by Tiepolo for the ceiling of the Church of the Scalzi in Venice in 1745. The ceiling was destroyed on 28 October 1915 following a bombing from the Austrian military during in World War I and is known only through black and white photographs, as well as oil study in the J. Paul Getty Musuem, Los Angeles (94.PA.20) and a larger modello in the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice (inv. 911) (F.R.)
