Casualty Isorithm
2018
Not on view
Through concentric circles and frenzied charcoal lines, Yulia Pinkusevich’s Casualty Isorithm references Cold War– era military manuals used to track casualties caused by nuclear explosions. The tension between the rhythmic circles and the chaos they represent reflects the artist’s experience growing up in the USSR. It also holds contemporary resonance, given Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. As the war has gone on, Pinkusevich has continued to create works in the Isorithm series, channeling her empathy and emotion into them to find solace during this grievous period.
