Cabinet (Armoire a deux corps)
late 16th century
Artwork Viewer
Produced in France, this highly original cabinet is the only known example of its type anywhere, composed of two parts, each with double doors, the lower set concealing drawers. It is distinguished by the elaborate relief scenes, each conveying architectural scenes rendered with carefully studied linear perspective. Beginning in Florence in the fifteenth century, artists began exploring the concept of linear perspective. Consider the different vantage points implied by the upper versus lower scene: how were these tableaux meant to relate?
