Bushbaby
2004
Printmaking has long been an important part of Jasper Johns’s creative process. He made his first prints at Universal Limited Art Editions in 1960. Initially he used lithography to create print versions of the iconic flags, maps, and targets that filled his paintings. In 1967 Johns expanded his repertoire to include etching, later taking up screenprinting. Bushbaby, with its bold coloration and the inclusion of an abstracted figure, represents a departure from his previous work. Johns is characteristically silent about the meaning of the figure and to what the print’s title might refer: the African primate, the Australian bush, or an American president?
