Beggars Receiving Alms at the Door of a House
1648
Not on view
Rembrandt returned to the subject of panhandlers at a doorway in this etching dated 1648. A blind man, his eyes enveloped in the shadows of the brim of his hat, holds a hurdy-gurdy half-concealed by his boy, who stands with his back to us. Here the artist focuses not on the performance, but on the simple act of charity as the homeowner drops a coin into the poor mother's outstretched hand.
