Abraham and Isaac
1645
Not on view
Rembrandt repeatedly portrayed the Old Testament patriarch Abraham. In this etching of 1645 he focused on an unusual moment: when Isaac helps his father prepare to make a burnt offering, not knowing that he is the intended martyr. Abraham gestures to the sky, suggesting that God will provide the sacrificial lamb. The unbearable tension of the scene seems to be concentrated in the very tip of Abraham's pointing figure.
