In his etchings Rembrandt frequently juxtaposed fully developed and summarily sketched passages, as is seen in comparing the globe and books in the foreground with the background of this enigmatic etching of a scholar startled by a blinding apparition of light in his darkened study. Art historians have debated the meaning of this print, some theorizing that it represents the legendary figure of Faust, who made a deal with the Devil.
