A Broadside of Mount Tamalpais

Google Lens entry:
Choosing a subject popular with both European and American artists—mountain scenery—Keith here depicts Mount Tamalpais, in Marin County, north of San Francisco. When this painting was exhibited in New York, a reviewer for a San Francisco newspaper favorably described a landscape which showed, "....entire unpretentiousness, freedom from affectation and from strange and startling effects."
The Scottish-born William Keith moved to San Francisco in 1859 and developed a lifelong passion for the California landscape. He found success painting landscapes for the Northern Pacific Railroad, and these commissions financed travel to Europe to further his art education. On a return trip to San Francisco, Keith befriended the naturalist John Muir. Their remarkable friendship has been deemed “one of the important cultural transactions of the period in California."

contrasted it with the works of Keith's East Coast rivals:
William Keith's . . . “Tamalpais” . . . [has] introduced to the
lovers of art in this section a name which is evidently destined
to become justly famous. . . . [Frederic E. Church's and Albert
Bierstadt's] brilliant landscape effects sometimes tend to give
exaggerated views of nature as really inartistic as painting the
lily itself . . . but in Mr. Keith's . . . treatment . . . [we find] entire
unpretentiousness, freedom from affectation and from strange
and startling effects.
