When Garcia first created this striking portrait of Frida Kahlo in 1975, it was as a color screenprint used for a 1976 GalerÃa de la Raza poster-calendar. According to the Diego Rivera scholar Ramón Favela, Garcia's Frida Kahlo of 1975 was probably one of the first - if not the earliest- image of Kahlo produced in the United States before her visage became ubiquitous. In 2002, Garcia returned to the subject, refashioning it in the expressionist woodcut medium. Placed against an audaciously colored background, Garcia's empowered Kahlo is meant to transfer strength to the viewer.
