Javier Manrique

San Francisco, October 2012—The de Young museum will host fresco artist Javier Manrique, October 31 through December 2, 2012, as part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s Artist-in-Residence Program. Manrique’s project, Frescomania, inspired by the Teotihuacan wall painting at the de Young, connects the past with the present, bringing the ancient art of fresco into a contemporary context.

During Manrique’s residency in the de Young’s Kimball Education Gallery, the public will be invited to learn about the fresco process, the materials and tools it requires, and design and create tiles of their own. Visitors may reference interpretations of famous wall fragments, and will be inspired to seek out the numerous frescoes open to public view throughout San Francisco. “Fresco is all around us, but we may not know it,” says Manrique. Frescomania aims to provide greater knowledge and awareness of this age-old process.

Committed to the time, energy and trust required in fresco painting, Manrique has created and exhibited work both nationally and internationally. He is a founding member of Grupo Arteria based in Mexico City, has taught fresco painting at California College of the Arts (CCA), and is the current president of San Francisco’s Project Artaud.

Visiting the de Young Museum

The de Young, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and located in Golden Gate Park, showcases American art from the 17th through the 21st centuries, international contemporary art, textiles, and costumes, and art from the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa.

Fresco Painting an Orthodox Church

Presentation showing the process of fresco painting in Orthodox churches as practiced in the 21st century. Fr. Patrick and Fr.
