SAN FRANCISCO (April 2, 2013)—The de Young Museum will host Bay Area artist Susan Tonkin Riegel from April 3 through April 28, 2013, as part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s Artist-in-Residence Program. A mixed-media artist who explores symbols, archetypes, numbers, and letters in her work, Tonkin Riegel will transform the Kimball Education Gallery at the de Young into an intimate space for visitors to find their own artistic voices.

Inspired by diverse influences such as vivid dreams, international travel, and children’s art, Tonkin Riegel uses acrylic paint, pastels, graphite, thread, and paper to create her ethereal work. She emphasizes spontaneity and intuition in her creative process stating, “My work is about being in the present moment.”

Born in San Francisco, Susan Tonkin Riegel graduated from UC Berkeley, where she studied with notable Bay Area figurative painters Elmer Bischoff and Joan Brown. She received her master’s degree at California State University, Sacramento and has been involved in multiple solo and group shows nationally and internationally. Susan Tonkin Riegel is represented by the Pamela Skinner/Gwenna Howard/Contemporary Art and Alex Bult Galleries in Sacramento.

Patrons are invited to visit Susan Tonkin Riegel in the Kimball Education Gallery Wednesdays through Sundays from 1pm‒5pm and Fridays until 8:45 pm.

General Admission
$10 adults, $7 seniors (age 65 and over), $6 youths (age 13‒17) and college students with ID, FREE members and children 12 and under, FREE general admission the first Tuesday of each month.

Additional fees apply for special exhibitions.

About the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
