The primary focus of the volunteer program is to provide a friendly and energetic presence on the museum floor. On the floor volunteering is also the best way to familiarize yourself with museum programs and operations and to work with other like-minded volunteers. As other volunteer opportunities within the museum come available, you will have the opportunity to volunteer for those roles as well.
On the Floor
On the Museum floor, volunteers provide a welcoming and informed presence at the Information Desk and Parcel Check. Volunteers provide information to visitors including maps, tour & lecture suggestions, transit information, and local tips as well as assisting museum patrons in the Parcel Check. There are two floor shifts per day, the morning shift runs from 9 am–1:15 pm and the afternoon shift runs from 1–5:15 pm.
Achenbach Print Study Room
The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts has in its collection more than 90,000 works of art on paper including prints, drawings, artist books, and photographs. The Jacqueline and Peter Hoefer Print Study Room is open Saturdays 11:30 am–2:30 pm. Volunteers are on site in the print study room to describe the print processes to patrons and answer questions about printmaking. Fine Art Printmaking experience is required.
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are committed to offering services that make its collections, exhibitions, and programs accessible to all visitors. Our Access Program is available to patrons with mobility issues, low vision, or those that require ASL translation. Access program volunteers are onsite during Access Days to provide support on the floor in various capacities. On the floor museum volunteer experience is required.
Behind the Scenes/Administration
These volunteers provide as-needed support for various departments by assisting with mailings, filing, paperwork, and phone calls, among other duties. Volunteers gain a new perspective of museum and department functions by working in these administrative areas. On the floor museum volunteer experience is required.
Most museum goers do not know that volunteers create all the intricate flower arrangements in both museums. The Flower Committee works with a team to shop at the Flower Mart to design and create artistic fresh-flower arrangements at the de Young and the Legion of Honor. Professional floral experience or floral design degree required.
Gardening and Landscaping
We offer volunteer gardening opportunities at both the Legion of Honor and deYoung museum grounds. Our teams of volunteer gardeners have been taking care of the museum grounds for over 20 years.
Special Events and Projects
Volunteers are able to assist with various special events that take place at the Museums, such as the Fair Trade Bazaar and the Holiday Artisan Fair. They perform a variety of duties depending on the needs of the events, including check-in and registration, materials assembly, and hospitality assistance.
