Recent acquisition: Opificio della Pietre Dure (Granducal Hardstone Workshops), Florence, Panel with a Vase of Flowers, 1600–1650. Hardstones (lapis lazuli, amethyst, Sicilian jasper, Sienese agate, chalcedony, and carnelian), marbles (verde antico, rosso antico, bianco e nero), and alabaster, set into black Belgian marble. Museum purchase, gift of Diane B. Wilsey, Roscoe and Margaret Oakes Income Fund, Raymond L. Parker Bequest Fund, Dorothy Spreckels Munn Bequest Fund, Ruth L. & Alfred B. Koch Trust; Genevieve Knowles Woods Bequest Fund; Fine Arts Museums Foundation Auction Proceeds; and the Michael Taylor Fund. 2005.93

European Painting

European Painting
The Legion of Honor's rich collection of European paintings includes masterworks from the 14th through the 20th centuries. Paintings on display include works by Fra Angelico, El Greco, Rubens, Rembrandt, Watteau, Gainsborough, Monet, Bouguereau, Matisse, and Picasso.

European Decorative Art

European Decorative Art
The Fine Arts Museums' collection of European Decorative Art includes furniture and other decorative items as well as sculpture. Highlights include French Baroque inlaid furniture, 18th-century English porcelain, and of course the Legion's world-famous collection of Rodin sculpture, including an original cast of the Thinker, situated in the Court of Honor.

Works on Paper

Works on Paper
The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts collection, one of the largest in the United States, includes more than 70,000 prints, drawings, and illustrated books. Spanning six centuries, the collection features works by artists as diverse as Dürer, Gauguin, Malevich, Kandinsky, and O'Keeffe, as well as Japanese prints and Persian and Indian minatures.
