Families with Kids
Make a family visit to the museum one to remember! There's lots to do and see for kids of all ages.Art after School Become the smartest kid in your class! Join us for the de Young's series of free after-school classes for children in 1st through 8th grades. Art after School offers an in-depth exploration of world cultures through the museum's extensive collections of art from Africa, Mesoamerica, Oceania, and North America. Through careful observation and engaging art activities, these classes explore the connections between the visual arts, language arts, and social studies.
Classes are free; reservations required. Classes meet twice. Wednesdays, 4:00–5:30 p.m. The Art after School program is based on the de Young's Get Smart with Art curriculum materials. Content directly supports the California state standards for 1st through 8th grades. For a schedule or more information, e-mail elewmorris@famsf.org or call 415-750-3658. Children 4 to 6 attend Big Kids/Little Kids, and children 7 through 12 attend Doing and Viewing Art. Children under age 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
Weekly programs are from 10:30 a.m. to noon (open to the general public) and from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. (open to museum members only). Programs are free after museum admission, with no pre-registration required. Sign in 15 minutes before the start of class. Programs begin promptly—no late admittance. Classes for children ages 4 to 14 are taught by professional artist-teachers and include explorations of works in the museum's galleries as well as visual art activities.
