K-12 Students
Get Smart with Art School Tours Docent Led Tours Docents at the Museums help students to discover their ability to look at, think about, and enjoy art. Working with small groups in the galleries, the docents encourage dialogue about the art, artists, and cultures represented in the collections and special exhibitions. Each tour is designed to support the grade specific curriculum series Get Smart with Art @ the de Young.
Get Smart with Art is generously supported by 
A minimum of eight weeks' advance notice is required. Tours are usually 45 minutes long, depending on the age group and are offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Due to their popularity, tours of special exhibitions are limited. School tours are free to educational groups.
Audio Tours When docents are not available for school tours, educators are encouraged to take an easy-to-use, self-guided, Audio Tour of the de Young Museum’s Permanent Collection. Hear interviews with museum curators, find out about the history of the de Young Museum and the architecture of the new building, and explore the fascinating stories behind many of the objects on view. Tours are available for students of all ages. This type of tour is led by chaperones provided by the school (parents, teachers, aides) and allows students to interact with the artwork by way of a curriculum-based worksheet provided to each class before their visit.
A minimum of four weeks’ advance notice is required. Please allow a minimum of one hour, from arrival to departure, to view the selected galleries. Tours begin at 10:00am and can be booked up to 4:00pm. Complimentary tickets are provided for the required number of chaperones: 1 adult to every 10 students. A photo ID will be held per chaperone while audio tour equipment is being rented. Students may view additional galleries with the audio tour equipment following their guided tour.
Independent Viewing Educators are also welcome to lead classes on self-guided tours of the Museums. Educators must make a reservation to guarantee entry. A month's notice is required for all self-guided school group tours, space permitting. To help shape your students experience, a copy of the Get Smart with Art @ the de Young curriculum series.
Reservations To make a reservation for a docent-led, audio tour-led or independent viewing fee waiver, please use the reservation forms in the gray column to the right of the screen or call 415.750.2603. Poets-in-the-Galleries Devorah Major, poet and poetry teacher, will lead each class through two 90-minute sessions in the de Young and the Legion of Honor. Students will participate in a variety of writing exercises designed to raise their awareness of the art objects they are viewing and to sharpen their ability to use language effectively to interpret what they see and experience.
Poetry classes are available to students in grades 4 through 12.

Museum Ambassador Program This award-winning program trains high school students to give presentations and museum tours about the museums' collections to elementary school classes and community groups. These teen educators provide a unique and interactive approach to learning about art.
How to become a Museum Ambassador:
Ambassadors are recruited twice a year: in September for the academic year program and March/April for the summer program. Ambassadors are paid minimum wage for training and presentations. Ambassadors must attend a San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) high school. Contact the Museum Ambassador office for more information and an application. Advanced Placement Art History for High School Students Advanced Placement Art History is a one-year course that will develop students' abilities to examine works of art, become acquainted with major art forms, and understand art from cultures around the world. The class will feature field trips, slide lectures, discussions, and the viewing of works of art.
No prior experience in art history is necessary for students to take this course, but the course is designed to meet college standards and requires a high degree of commitment to academic work. Students can receive academic credit and will be eligible to take the Advanced Placement Art History national exam in the Spring.
Classes are open to all qualified Bay Area high school students. Taking the class is free, but students will need to purchase the required text and pay the A.P. exam fee. Children's Theater--Weekdays for K-3 School Groups This year the Children’s Theater Association of San Francisco presents Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
The school performances are for grades K through 3. All performances are held in the Florence Gould Theater at the Legion of Honor on Wednesday and Friday mornings at 10 a.m.; the performance lasts about an hour. Enter Lincoln Park at 34th Avenue and Clement Street. Entry to the theater is through the front door of the Legion of Honor. The play is free, but reservations are required.
