Docents
What is a docent?
A docent is a volunteer tour guide. The word derives from the Latin word docere, meaning “to teach.” Docents serve as a vital link between the public and our museums. They:
- facilitate learning by helping audiences of all ages understand and enjoy our permanent collections and special exhibitions, and
- engage visitors in interactive experiences that give them a new appreciation of the visual arts.
The docents of the Fine Arts Museums offer daily tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions. Tours are free after museum admission and, where required, special exhibition admission. For a current listing of tours, days, and times, please check the website calendar or on site at either museum.
