The de Young is accessible to wheelchair users and a limited number of wheelchairs may be borrowed at the Information Desks on a first-come-first–served basis. Materials in alternate format are available on request. Audio tours are free to blind visitors, and printed scripts are provided. For performances in the Koret Auditorium, assistive listening devices can be obtained from the theater technicians. Assistive listening devices for Docent Tours are available, by appointment, from the accessibility coordinator. Sign language interpretation is provided with two weeks notice, last minute requests are accommodated if possible. See de Young floor plan.

There are bathrooms on all three levels in the building and several levels of the Education Tower , as well as a family bathroom in the Kimball Education Gallery.

Transportation to the de Young

Public transportation
Accessible Muni buses #5,#21,and #44 stop just outside Golden Gate Park at 8th and Fulton. The 44 also stops near the front of the museum on Tea Garden Drive (Southbound) and on Concourse Drive near the Academy of Sciences (Northbound). The accessible N Judah Stops at 9th and Judah. Bart riders can transfer to the N Judah at downtown stops, or they can transfer to the 44 at the Mission station.

Private vehicles
The Concourse parking structure has set aside 16 of its 400 spaces for disability placards. Two of the placard spaces are for vans. The parking structure can accommodate vehicles that are up to 8’2.” The disability placard spaces are on the upper levels, at grade with the entrance to the museum’s Exhibition Level. The entry to the structure, at 10th and Fulton, is at the lower level. Even if the structure is full, people with placards will be allowed a 20 minute grace-period to drive through and use the garage for drop-off.

Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive, the road that passes the main entrance of the de Young, is open for drop-offs Monday through Saturday. On Sundays and holidays, when John F. Kennedy Parkway and Tea Garden Drive are closed, people with disability placards can take advantage of their 20 minute drive-through period to drop-off passengers at the entrance to the de Young or the ramp to street level.

There are disability placard surface parking spaces in the general area of the de Young: On John F. Kennedy Parkway there is one near the Rose Garden, and three near the Conservatory of Plants. There are two spaces on Martin Luther King at the Japanese Tea Garden.

Taxis can drop-off and pick-up visitors at the main entrance. Volunteers at the Information Desk will help with calling a cab.

Tours
Access Docents who have received additional training are available by appointment to lead tours that accommodate the interests of each group or individual.

For blind visitors, a tour can include audio description and the opportunity to touch certain sculpture and decorative arts on exhibition.

Workshops
Hands-on workshops for art lovers, teachers, and group leaders are adaptable to any skill level. The workshops are offered twice a year, and reservations are required.

Access Hours or Days
When a popular exhibition is uncrowded, there is extra seating in the galleries and docents lead tours. By reservation.
