Discarded to Divine

Discarded to Divine debuts one-of-a-kind creations designed from recycled materials by Bay Area fashion designers and students of recycled couture to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s programs for the poor and homeless.

Bay Area fashion designers such as Jessica McClintock, Colleen Quen, Nice Collective, Cari Borja, Verrieres & Sako, Michael Boris, and Sara Shepherd join fashion students from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, City College of San Francisco, and Academy of Art University.

The designers create items inspired by the de Young’s permanent collection and produced at least 50 percent from source material found in donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society that could not be resold by the organization: old curtains, stained neckties, torn shirts and tee shirts, unusable work pants and jeans. The creations include cocktail dresses, gowns and wraps, costumes, separates, outerwear, and accessories for both men and women. Don’t miss this great opportunity to view these works of art in the Piazzoni Murals Room. www.discardedtodivine.org

Music by Von Iva and DJ Omar presented by Noise Pop

Von Iva, the Bay Area synth rock trio—fronted by vixen soulstress Jillian Iva and featuring Becky Kupersmith on keyboard and Kelly Harris on drums—takes gritty soul-drenched dance punk to the masses. This fashion-forward trio sets every dance floor on fire. www.voniva.com

DJ Omar’s decade-long career in San Francisco's nightlife has produced some of the city’s most musically diverse and inclusive dance parties. Currently, Omar has returned to his roots by collaborating with Live 105 music director Aaron Axelsen and Popscene, the legendary club he started a decade ago.

Established in San Francisco in 1993, the music festival Noise Pop has developed into full-scale cultural happening, adding gallery art shows, a music-themed film festival, educational panel discussions with musicians and music industry professionals, an indie designer trunk sale, and a number of planned and spontaneous shindigs. www.noisepop.com
