Cultural Encounters: Friday Nights at the de Young Presents . . .

Live Music and Dance Featuring dance tips with Cynthia Glinka and Johnathan Poretz with the MoodSwing Orchestra

6:00–6:30 p.m. Cynthia Glinka, a dance coach and choreographer, instructs, entertains, and inspires. With her dance tips and tricks, you won't miss a beat! Join us on the dance floor.

6:30–8:30 p.m. Jonathan Poretz and the MoodSwing Orchestra covers big-band hits made famous by such bandleaders as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, and Xavier Cugat. The orchestra's fresh approach to classic big-band music has attracted an enthusiastic following among Bay Area music fans. Bring your dancing shoes!

Hands-on Art Activity for the Entire Family

Create a Timothy Horn–inspired “glass” slipper.

Sketching Tours at the de Young in celebration of the Architecture and the City Festival

First-come-first-served and limited to 20 participants; no reservations.
In celebration of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Francisco, Lisa Bostwick will conduct sketching tours of the de Young’s special architectural features located in the free zones of the museum. Bostwick is a longtime educator and a painter. Her work is in private collections throughout the state, and she currently teaches at San Francisco’s Drew School. Meet at the AIA art-making table located at the entrance to Wilsey Court at 6:30 p.m. www.bostwickpaints.com.

The de Young Poetry Series: Christian Bök and Kasey Mohammad

Author of the popular collections Eunoia and Crystallography, Christian Bök is a leading figure of Newlipo, which employs innovative concepts and procedures in the creation of poetry. He is also a brilliant voice talent who created artificial languages for Gene Roddenberry's Earth: The Final Conflict and author of a unique book of criticism, 'Pataphysics: The Poetics of an Imaginary Science.

With his poetry book Deer Head Nation, Kasey Mohammad inaugurated Flarf, a poetry movement that makes use of online search engines. His other works include A Thousand Devils and Breathalyzer. He co-edited Quentin Tarantino and Philosophy: How to Philosophize with a Pair of Pliers and a Blowtorch. 

The de Young Poetry Series is curated by Paul Hoover, a poet, editor, and professor of creative writing at San Francisco State University. Major U.S. poets read from their works, followed by a book signing.

Other Friday Nights programs are free. Admission is always free to members; regular admission fees apply for non-members to visit the galleries. A $5 surcharge applies for non-members to visit the special exhibition Chihuly at the de Young.
