"Will Work for Art" takes you behind the scenes to meet the people who make the Fine Arts Museums possible. Rich Rice, the AV/IT Coordinator, is about as behind-the-scenes as you can get! Originally from Connecticut, Rich has been with the Museums for 15 years (he thinks).
What do you do here at the Museums?
I manage the technical aspects of theater events and exhibitions. I’m also responsible for Mac desktop support.
How did you become involved with the Museums?
A bit of luck: I mentioned to a friend that I had a background in theater work. It turned out that his friend ran the theater at the Legion of Honor, and they were looking for part-time theater techs. I’m not sure I was even looking for another job, but it seemed like a great opportunity.
What is your favorite artwork or gallery in the Museums and why?
Although I don’t have an art background, there are number of works in both Museums that I like to visit when I have time. But I’d have to say that my favorite “gallery” is still the Florence Gould Theater at the Legion. It’s a beautiful space, one of the best venues in the City, and home to some amazing performances.

What do you do when you’re not at the Museums?
I have a few outside projects, including directing the California Brazil Camp, an annual music and dance camp for adults. We’re currently getting ready for our 14th year.

What are you working on right now?
We are always busy supporting a variety of special events, like Friday Nights at the de Young, as well as all the latest exhibitions.
Do you remember the first time you visited the Legion or the de Young?
What I remember is being new to the city, and riding my bike past an inspiring, classic building in Lincoln Park that impressed me. It was a while before I knew that it was a world-class museum.
