New King Tut Website Launches!

King Tut website screenshot

We recently launched a new website for our upcoming exhibition Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs, which opens at the de Young on June 27. Check it out at www.tutsanfrancisco.org.

The website was designed and constructed in-house using the open-source Drupal platform. On it you can order tickets for FAMSF members and groups (general public tickets on sale in April 6), preview a selection of the artifacts on view in the exhibition, and send a King Tut e-card.

We'll be rolling out more content, including background information on ancient Egypt and a look back at the 1979 Treasures of Tutankhamun exhibition at the de Young in the weeks to come.

The Unauthorized Rolling Stones get ready to rock!

Andy Warhol famously said, “In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.” Last Saturday night, the de Young was filled with thousands of Warhol fans celebrating the opening of Warhol Live, which runs through May 17.

The POP PARTY was a huge success. ArtPoint, the museum’s group for young professionals, hosted a special VIP pre-party that turned the observation tower and the Piazzoni Murals Room into exclusive lounges. The main event kicked off at 9 pm where guests sipped on Nico-tinis and ate Pop Tarts® while listening to the Unauthorized Rolling Stones. Costumed go-go dancers moved to the music on platforms surrounding the stage.

Warhol Live was open and partygoers walked through the exhibition at their leisure. Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick look-alikes were seen parading through the building occasionally stopping to be included in photos. A photo booth allowed guests to capture their own 15 minutes of fame from the party. It was truly an amazing night. There is no doubt that Warhol himself would have been amused by the turnout.

Read more about the POP PARTY and check out some more photos of the event on the Bigelow Report, Catherine Bigelow's blog on 7x7.

Friday Nights: Celebrating Andy Warhol

The Andys: Paul Sutfin, Valentine, Mary Beth Peterson, Paul Knowles

Friday evenings at the de Young have become a regular part of my weekly schedule. I just can’t seem to pass up the chance to socialize with friends at the de Young after regular museum hours. I think it is quite possibly the best happy hour in the city.

In honor of the newly opened Warhol Live exhibition, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco programmed a number of totally outrageous activities to compliment the show. This is your chance to travel back in time and hang out at the Silver Factory and Studio 54.

My personal favorites include:

  • February 20, DJ Juanita More spins an eclectic mix of underground ‘70s funk from 6 pm-7 pm.
  • February 27, the film, Basquiat (1996), tells the story of the meteoric rise of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, Warhol’s protégé.
  • March 6, John Kuzich demonstrates Warhol inspired work on a 30-square-inch framed art panel.
  • May 15, Silver Factory recreation with live music performed by the Mutants, a SF based art-punk band.
Friday Nights at the de Young offers a variety of interdisciplinary arts programs, including live music, poetry, films, dance, tours, and lectures. The entire museum is open until 8:45 pm. The café is open with a special Friday Night dinner menu, and a no-host bar serves cocktails. There are art-making activities for everyone.

Don’t forget to check out the Warhol Live: POP PARTY tomorrow February 21 from 9 pm to midnight... [more]

Wannabe Warhols Converge on the de Young!

Check out these photos from last week’s Andy Warhol casting call. Some of the Warhol look-a-likes took pictures, read lines, painted on canvas or just plain sat there quietly. It was a treat to see such creativity and excitement for the upcoming Warhol Live exhibition.

If you missed your chance to become Andy Warhol last weekend, do not worry. We will be having an additional round of auditions this Saturday, February 7, 2009 from noon until 3 pm in the Piazzoni Murals Room at the de Young Museum, 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive, Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Please arrive in your completed costume: wig, makeup and attitude. Don’t forget to bring your resume and 4x6 or 8x10 photograph of yourself, we will photograph you in your costume. To schedule an audition, please contact the public programs office at 415.750.7694 or e-mail nschach@famsf.org.

Do not miss the opening of Warhol Live on February 14, 2009 at the de Young!
